New York Giants

If you are an avid football fan and plan to visit New York, you can’t miss out on an opportunity to see the New York Giants in a home football game. The funny thing is that the New York Giants aren’t actually based in New York, but very close too it. The New York Giants are headquartered in East Rutherford, New Jersey. If planning to attend, games can be seen during the fall and winter months; however if you are traveling to New York during the summer months, you can witness the New York Giants training and playing preseason football games instead. Regardless of what the New York Giants are doing, it will be in the same location: all training and home games take place in the Meadowlands Sports Complex, known as Giants Stadium.

The New York Giants were founded in 1925, and of the five teams that joined the National Football League that year they are the only team that still remains. The New York Giants are members of the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference. They have won 14 divisional championships and 9 conference championships. Regarding National Football League titles, the New York Giants hold six: four before the Super Bowl era, and two after. The New York Giants earned NFL titles in 1927, 1934, 1938, and 1956; and when the Super Bowl was established in 1967, the New York Giants won championship games for the 1986 and 1990 footballs seasons. The New York Giants also boast 15 players in the Hall of Fame.

Coincidently, the New York Giants was a name for both a football team and a baseball team. Today the New York Giants baseball team is known as the San Francisco Giants, and has been known by that name since 1957. However, while the two teams shared the same hometown, the New York Giants football team was called New York Football Giants to distinguish between the two sports teams. This name became the official team name and, in fact, the New York Football Giants is still the team’s legal corporate name.

Today the New York Giants’ roster features some prominent names in the National Football League. Eli Manning, quarterback, is among them. The number one draft pick in 2004, Eli Manning was initially selected by the San Diego Chargers. However, he refused to play for the team and was later picked up by the New York Giants where he is the team’s starting quarterback. Jeremy Shockey is another prominent player. As a first round draft pick in 2002, Shockey is a starting tight end for the New York Giants. He was the Diet Pepsi Rookie of the Year in 2002, and has been elected to play in the Pro Bowl four years in a row. With players like these, the New York Giants have easily made it to the playoffs every year and are a definite sight to see if visiting New York.

New York Mets

Although the New York Yankees may stand out at the baseball team of New York, another major league baseball team franchise is the New York Mets. The New York Mets call the borough of Queens, New York their home. The New York Mets are members of the East Division, and the National League of Major League Baseball. They have won only two World Series championships in their tenure: one in 1969 against the Baltimore Orioles, and the other in 1986 against the Boston Red Sox.

The New York Mets are often referred to as the bastard stepchild of the New York Yankees. Whereas the New York Yankees are known as the most successful franchise in baseball history, the New York Mets hold some of the most unsuccessful records. The New York Mets are among the teams having lost the most games in a season. In 1969, the New York Mets became the team third worst team in this regard, with a season score of 40 to 120. Only two major league baseball teams have lost more games in a single season: the Cleveland Spiders in 1989 and the Detroit Tigers in 2003.

The New York Mets, like the New York Yankees, are building a new baseball stadium to call home. The New York Mets, who currently play at Shea Stadium, will be playing at a new stadium in the coming years. Named Citi Field, the new home of the New York Mets is slated to be ready in 2009. However, the history between the New York Mets and Shea Stadium should not be forgotten. This is especially true of Jim Bunning, a New York Mets pitcher who was the only player to ever pitch a perfect game in the history of Shea Stadium.

The New York Mets can boast several famous players. Nolan Ryan and Darryl Strawberry are among them. Nolan Ryan played a record-tying 27 baseball seasons for several teams, including the New York Mets, and holds several of baseball’s pitching records. He was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 1999. Today Darryl Strawberry remains the New York Mets’ player with the all-time most home runs and runs batted in.

The New York Mets are not the best baseball team in Major League Baseball, but they are a definitely part of New York that makes the state what it is. In their 46 year history they have only won two championships. However, New York Mets fans are hardly seasonal, and will stand by their team rain or shine. This is something that a winning team, like the New York Yankees, can’t always attest to.

New York Yankees

The New York Yankees is a professional baseball team who calls The Bronx, New York its hometown. The funny thing is that the New York Yankees did not originate in New York. In fact, the team was founded in 1901 in Baltimore, Maryland. Back then, the New York Yankees were known as the Baltimore Orioles. However don’t be confused with today’s Baltimore Orioles, which is also a professional baseball team. The Baltimore Orioles that were founded in 1901 became the New York Highlanders in a1903, and then later became the New York Yankees in 1913.

The New York Yankees play at Yankee Stadium in New York, and are considered Major League Baseball’s most winning team. The New York Yankees have won 26 World Series and 39 Pennants for the American League. They are considered the most successful franchise in sports history. The New York Yankees also have a representative in the Baseball Hall of Fame for every baseball position.

The New York Yankees are also part of baseball’s most notorious rivalry – the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. The rivalry became even more notable when the two teams were allowed to play each other with the creation of the Wild Card in 1995. More importantly, however, may be the New York Yankees and their part in the Curse of the Bambino. Babe Ruth, called The Bambino, was sold by the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees in 1918. Since that year, the Boston Red Sox have been unable to win a World Series championship game. Well, that was until 2004. In 2004, the Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees after returning from a 0-3 deficit, then went on to win the World Series of 2004. Still, the New York Yankees will always be the major player of the Bambino’s Curse whether it is believed or not.

The New York Yankees boast some of the greatest players of all time. Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig dominated the baseball industry while playing for the New York Yankees from 1923 to 1935. Babe Ruth holds the 3rd highest record of home runs ever. Joe DiMaggio was also a player for the New York Yankees, and helped the team to four World Series victories from 1936 to 1939. With other notable players like Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford, and Yogi Berra, the New York Yankees won 10 pennants and seven World Series during the 1950’s. Today, the team is lead by players like Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter who, like their predecessors, have led the New York Yankees to World Series wins and will continue to do so in the future.

New York Post

When discussing New York history, you can’t leave out the state’s newspapers and written history. The New York Post is an integral part of the state’s history and culture. The New York Post dates back to the creation of this country, and had today become one of the ten largest newspapers in the country. It was founded with only $10,000 by Alexander Hamilton in 1801, and was then known as the New York Evening Post.

Alexander Hamilton was a Federalist, and he founded the newspaper with other Federalist Party members. Together, they were upset about the presidential election of Thomas Jefferson, and were equally dismayed at the rise of his Democratic-Republican party. They created the New York Post in a broadsheet format, characterized by long vertical lines and pages. It was very much unlike that which we see today. Today the New York Post resembles that of most tabloids: smaller print and pages, focusing more on local-interest and entertainment stories.

And as a tabloid newspaper, the New York Post is well known for its sports entertainment and gossip columns. The sports section always begins on the back page, and many a sports fan welcomes Phil Mushnick and his media sports coverage to their breakfast and coffee mornings. The New York Posts’ gossip stars are equally known. Columnists Liz Smith and Cindy Adams are part of the city’s best known gossip section. The New York Post used to feature its gossip section on page six, earning it the reference “Page Six.” Today it is found somewhere between pages ten and twelve, however it is still referred to as “Page Six.” The section is so popular that in 2006 the New York Post debuted a free magazine, inside the newspaper, rightfully called Page Six: The Magazine.

Although the entertainment and gossip sections of the New York Post have made it increasingly popular, especially among celebrities, this characteristic of the Post have also earned it criticism. It is only since Rupert Murdoch’s News Corportation took over the New York Post in 1976 that such sensationalism has been the focus. Criticisms target the lurid headlines it posts, as well as the conservative slant its contents seem to provide. Many contribute the conservative bias and blatant advocacy of the New York Post to Murdoch himself, saying that the newspaper takes on and emphasizes the views and opinions of the ownership.

Whether it is criticism or favoritism, friend or foe, the New York Post is still one of the top ten largest newspapers in the country. It has a circulation of over 724,000 and is the oldest newspaper to consistently be a daily distributing news media. The New York Post is a historic part of New York, and forever will remain that way.

New York Times

The New York Times is another piece of New York culture. Founded in 1851, it is the largest metropolitan newspaper in the United States. The New York Times has won Pulitzer Prize awards for journalism and is considered a newspaper of record. This means that it is a commonly referred to and cited source for information and events. The New York Times is unlike any newspaper in this country, and definitely earns its place in New York’s history and culture.

The New York Times is a highly revered newspaper. Its circulation is around 1.1 million on weekdays and 1.6 on Sundays. It is utilized in many university courses as a required reading. Most people would say that the New York Times is the start to their business and financial morning. And others would simply cite it as their number one reference choice for current events and op-ed pieces.

The New York Times is also one of the most popular websites on the Internet. For those who do not, or cannot afford to, subscribe to the printed version of the New York Times, the website is available for you. The New York Times online allows free subscriptions, and tends to keep articles online for one week. There after a small fee is charged for past articles, but it is still highly affordable. This makes the New York Times website, like the newspaper, one of the most sought after references for the reporting of national and international events.

Lately, however, the New York Times has been under some scrutiny. Some scandals have surfaced among the New York Times’ writers that have called the newspaper of record into question. Jayson Blair is a well known name when it comes to plagiarism and the New York Times. In 2003, he and other New York Times’ editors admitted to plagiarizing featured articles on important current events. These events included the Female Prisoner of War rescue of Jessica Lynch, and the Beltway Sniper attacks in Washington DC. Rick Bragg was another New York Times’ editor who resigned after similar allegations were brought to light. In Bragg’s case, he was accused of publishing articles written by a free lancer writer that received no credit for the work.

Many believe that situations such as the latter issues leave the New York Times without credibility. Others still believe in the New York Times as a newspaper of record, but believe it has lost its luster. Regardless, the New York Times still boasts a substantial circulation. And with over 555 million webpage hits as well, the New York Times will not loose its prominence any time soon.

New York University

New York University was established over 175 years ago with the intent of transcending the traditional elitist notion of higher education. Back then, American universities were host to only the most privileged and wealthy socio-economic classes. However, New York University was designed with the idea of opening its doors to all, regardless of class, gender, or race. What began as a class of 158 students in 1831, today New York University hosts a diverse student body of 40,000 in six different campus locations within Manhattan, New York.

New York University is the largest private university in the United States. It has a law school, a medical school and a dental school. It is perhaps most known for its fine arts program: New York University operates several theaters and other performing arts facilities to supports its fine and dramatic arts programs. New York University boasts over 350,000 alumni to date, and its student body is made up of domestic and international students alike. In fact, almost 10% of the New York University population is international students.

New York University is rated among the top 50 schools according to three separate, but well-known, university ranking systems. US News and World Report ranks it at 34th, Shanghai Jiao Tong ranks it as 30th, and Times Higher Education Supplement ranking system puts New York University at number 43. Among its academic disciplines, the undergraduate business degree program is ranked among the top 5 of its kind in the United States, and the graduate MBA program is ranked as number 15. New York University’s school of law is ranked at number 4!

The campus programs of New York University are as diverse as New York itself. There is a student organization to represent every interest, hobby or ethnic background. Greek life is popular at New York University, and many Greek fraternities and sororities actually originated at this campus. Although the first fraternities and sororities were social in nature, today there are many different styles of Greek clubs: some represent academic concentrations while others represent ethnic backgrounds.

New York University is a highly coveted campus of higher education, and it is easy to see why. From its origins to its social outlets, New York University has something to offer everyone. And this was the way it was intended. When it was founded by Albert Gallatin in 1831, the goal was to establish and educational center that was rational, practical and fitting for all. And that is what New York University still is today.

New York Stock Exchange

The New York Stock Exchange is another part of New York that makes the state so unique. Founded in 1817, it is just as the name describes: a stock exchange whose origins are in New York City. As a stock exchange, the New York Stock Exchange is designed as an efficient way for buyers and sellers to trade stocks of public companies in a single place. The theme of the stock exchange, an auction style format for buying and selling company stocks, makes it the best place to produce the fairest prices for stocks.

The New York Stock Exchange is also known as the Big Board and is situated on Wall Street in New York City. In fact, Wall Street has become synonymous with the New York Stock Exchange. It is the largest stock exchange in the world by virtue of its dollar per stock volume, or capitalization, which is currently over $25 trillion. And of all the stock exchanges in the world, the New York Stock Exchange has the second highest number of securities at 2,764. It was number one until the 1990’s when NASDAQ, another American stock exchange, exceeded it with over 3,300 securities.

Aside from simple statistics, the New York Stock Exchange is notoriously known as one of the contributors to the Great Depression of the 1930’s. On October 24, 1929, the New York Stock Exchange crashed and a panic ensued for investors to sell off everything they could. This contributed to Black Tuesday, Oct 29, and was historically marked as the precursor to the Great Depression. In 1938, however, several practices were put into place to protect investors in the future.

Other crashes within the New York Stock Exchange have prompted other protective measures. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, and stock market index on the New York Stock Exchange, experienced a crash of 22% during a single day in 1987. This led New York Stock Exchange advisors to impose halting rules on stock trading during similar single-day drops. Today, if the Dow Jones Industrial Average drops 10, 20 or 30 percent, trading will halt for one hour, two hours, or the rest of the day respectively. This measure is meant to avoid any reoccurrence of Black Tuesday in 1929.

Current the New York Stock Exchange is revisiting the need for protective measures. The current economy is suffering due to the sub-prime lending that has been going on in the mortgage and financial arenas. This economic woe is reflected on the New York Stock Exchange, as it has lost a considerable number of points in recent weeks. The US mortgage crisis is also hitting other stock markets, not just the New York Stock Exchange. The next several weeks, if not months, will show just whether the New York Stock Exchange will precipitate an economic recession like that which it has done before.
